Young Social Innovators – A talk with Ms Joan
Dobbyn
This year, I am part of the Young Social Innovators
group in school. YSI deepens young people’s understanding of the
interdependence of all people locally, regionally, nationally and
internationally. I chose to become part of YSI in order to make a difference,
to get involved and to create a better society. There are two YSI groups this
year as there was a huge amount of people wanting to be a part of YSI. I am in
Ms Kavanagh’s group and we are doing our project on the European Refugee
Crisis, it is called ‘ Reaching Beyond The Borders’ As a group we felt very
strong about this issue and we wanted to make a difference in Ireland for the
refugees living and travelling here.
On Tuesday, 27th of October, Ms Joan
Dobbyn, former teacher in St. Gerard’s and volunteer from Dun Laoghaire Refugee
Project came in to talk to us about her experience with the refugees in Ireland
and what we can do to help. Ms Dobbyn gave us many innovative and unique ideas
for our project and also helped us to decide to have an awareness day.
As a group, to help spread awareness for the refugee
crisis, we are going to wear red and invite the entire school to wear red also
on the awareness day in order to show respect for the little Syrian boy, Alan,
who was washed up on the shore.
We are also going to make up little wash bags for
adult refugees and bags for child refugees who are currently living in Ireland.
The talk with Ms Dobbyn was very inspirational and
we all are really grateful to her for spending some of her time with us.
Make sure to follow our social media pages in order
to keep up to date on our project.
