George Boole
My first project of transition year was a maths
project on George Boole, a famous mathematician. Coming back into Mr Drummy’s
first maths class of the year you never really know what to expect. We were
delighted to be split up into groups and given each a different, inspiring
mathematician to work on. But as always with Mr Drummy, there was a fun element
to the project. Each group was told at the start of presenting their project
they had to come into the classroom and do some sort of ‘maths pose’. We all
giggled when Mr Drummy tried to show us examples of what we could do for our
pose.
I was in a
group with Mia and Jackie and we all decided we were going to win the best
maths pose. While completing our project, we thought long and hard on how we
could make our pose innovative and unique to everyone else’s. After a few days
of brainstorming, we sat there hopeless, unsuccessful in coming up with a
magical maths pose. Suddenly Jackie’s stomach rumbled and I said out-loud to Mia
and her ‘I wish we had a nice apple pie right now’ Then it dawned on us. ‘PIE’
we all exclaimed. Pie is a continuous number in maths used to solve different
problems. It starts as 3.14 and goes on forever. We had finally figured out
what our maths pose was to be. We would bring in an apple pie as a pun on the
actual maths term and stand there with the pie while the ‘pie song’ would blare
out. Believe it or not, there is a pie song which is a very catchy tune with
just the same numbers repeated over and over again!
Needless to say our maths project was a success with
Mr Drummy scoffing the pie while we presented our project on George Boole to
the class. We attained an A and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole process of this
project.
